Apple Launches Digital ID: A New Era of Secure Identification in Apple Wallet

Meta Description: Apple introduces Digital ID in Apple Wallet — a secure, private way to create and present identification using a U.S. passport. Learn how it works and where it’s available.

Apple Introduces Digital ID in Apple Wallet

Apple has unveiled Digital ID, a new and secure way for users to store and present their identity using the Apple Wallet on iPhone or Apple Watch. This latest innovation allows users to create a digital version of their ID directly from their U.S. passport, enhancing both convenience and security.

At launch, the Digital ID feature will be available in beta across TSA checkpoints at over 250 U.S. airports, simplifying the identity verification process for domestic travelers. Apple plans to expand its acceptance to additional businesses and organizations in the future.

What is Digital ID in Apple Wallet?

The Digital ID lets users generate an official digital version of their identification that can be securely stored in the Apple Wallet. It’s designed for users who may not have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID, offering an alternative that ensures privacy and ease of access.

However, Apple clarifies that Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings. Instead, it’s aimed at providing a secure and digital method for identity verification within the United States.

How to Add a Digital ID to Apple Wallet

Adding a Digital ID is simple and user-friendly. Here’s how users can set it up:

  1. Open the Wallet app on iPhone and tap the Add (+) button.
  2. Select Driver’s License or ID Cards, then choose Digital ID.
  3. Scan the photo page of the physical U.S. passport using the iPhone.
  4. Use the iPhone to read the chip embedded in the passport for data verification.
  5. Take a selfie and perform guided facial movements for identity confirmation.
  6. Once verified, the Digital ID is securely added to the Apple Wallet.

Using and Presenting a Digital ID

To present their Digital ID, users simply double-click the side button or Home button to open Apple Wallet, select their Digital ID, and hold the iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader.
Before sharing, users can review what data is requested and use Face ID or Touch ID for authentication — ensuring that only the owner can authorize the transaction.

In the near future, Apple aims to enable Digital ID verification for businesses, apps, and online platforms, expanding its usability beyond airports.

Privacy and Security at the Core

Apple has designed Digital ID with security and privacy as top priorities. All ID data is encrypted and stored locally on the user’s device. Apple cannot view when, where, or how the ID is used. Users never need to hand over their device; only the necessary data for a transaction is shared, and only after the user’s biometric approval.

Expanding Apple Wallet’s Identity Features

With Digital ID, Apple continues to expand its digital identity ecosystem. The ability to add a driver’s license or state ID is already live in 12 states and Puerto Rico, and has even reached Japan through the My Number Card program.

The Digital ID marks the next step in Apple’s vision — combining convenience, privacy, and innovation to make digital identification more secure and widely accessible.
