Apple TV Adds More Classic Movies to Watch for Free

Apple TV is quietly expanding its movie collection with another batch of popular classic and blockbuster films. The new Apple TV classic movies are included with an Apple TV subscription, meaning subscribers can watch them without paying an extra rental or purchase fee.

The latest update follows another group of movies added in August. Apple has not built its streaming service around buying huge movie libraries, but it has continued to add selected films from time to time. This latest batch gives subscribers more well-known titles to choose from.

New Apple TV Classic Movies Depend on Your Country

One important thing to remember is that the movie selection is not the same everywhere. Film rights are often negotiated separately for different countries, so Apple cannot always offer the same titles worldwide.

For example, subscribers in the US can currently find movies such as 28 Days Later, American Gangster, Black Hawk Down, Blood Diamond, Fury, Good Will Hunting, Jurassic World, Taxi Driver and Tropic Thunder.

The UK selection is different. It includes Godzilla, Inception, Jurassic World, The Martian, The Social Network, Spider-Man: Far from Home, The Town and War of the Worlds (2005).

Here is a quick comparison:

Tropic ThunderThe Town

The difference shows how much regional licensing can affect a streaming service’s movie library.

Watch Them While They Are Available

There is one catch with these Apple TV classic movies. Their availability may not be permanent.

Apple has not announced exactly how long these licensed movies will remain on the service. Some titles from the previous August update are still available, but movies can disappear when licensing agreements expire.

This means subscribers should not assume that a movie will stay available for years. If there is a particular title you have been planning to watch, it may be worth moving it higher on your watchlist.

What About Apple Originals?

This situation is different for movies that Apple produces itself or has acquired as part of its own long-term catalog. Films such as the Oscar-winning CODA are generally expected to remain available for much longer.

For viewers, the latest update is a useful reminder that streaming libraries are always changing. Apple TV subscribers now have several familiar movies to explore, but the safest approach is simple: if you want to watch a newly added movie, don’t wait too long.
